Newton Test Night at Central Park!

Say, gang: what are you doing this Tuesday night? I’m talking the night of FEBRUARY 17, 2015… OK aside from saving the world from imminent destruction by an alien armada or solving the perpetual motion mechanism dilemma in your spare time or even just doing a crossword puzzle with a pen? Can you spare a few moments?

At Central Park in Plantation (where we met regularly for Speed Training with Coach Bob) on Tuesday the 17th at 6:45 PM, Friends In Training is teaming up with our buddies at Runners Depot for a Newton Test Night! Here’s your chance to not only hang out and run with your awesomely wonderful and insanely attractive FIT buddies, but you can also test drive a pair of Newton shoes to see if they are to your liking. And let’s face it, a chance to experience new running shoes is always a cause for celebration, right? Just say the words “new running shoes” and watch eyes glaze over and mouths start salivating. And that’s just us GUYS!

But wait (as they say), there’s more! After our fun at the park, join us for a special social event! We’re gonna be schlepping on over to Zona Fresca in Plantation to grab a bite and celebrate. They are located at 1095 S. University Drive, on the west side of University, halfway between Broward Blvd. and I-595, behind the Applebee’s. Do not miss this event! It’ll be lots of fun, for sure, but it will also benefit our very own FIT Team For Kids group charity. Mention FIT at the cash register and 15% of your check will go towards their group fundraising for Team For Kids.

So let’s see… hanging out with friends, testing out new running shoes, having an awesome dinner AND raising money for charity? Now THAT’S entertainment! And for a good cause! See you then my friends, and keep kicking asphalt!

Speed Training begins on Tuesday, October 14th. Should you attend?

(A quick note: yes, this is a repost of last year’s Speed Training announcement. But it’s so nice, we ran it twice! I’m not being lazy, I swear… Love, Matt)

Here’s a lucky seven good reasons why you should attend Speed Training at Central Park in Plantation:

1) The coaches! Coach Bob and Coach Veronica have between them a wealth of knowledge and experience to help you kick your running skills into overdrive. Bob Dozoretz is a certified ASEP and RRCA coach, has been working with FIT for years, and is a super cool guy. Veronica Ghoghos is our resident Group E bad-ass coach, also RRCA and USA Track and field certified, and is also a super cool gal (she was only the messenger when I got laid off in 2007). There is so much expertise to learn from Bob and Veronica, so taking advantage of it can only help your running form!

2) Even if you don’t think of yourself as a Speedy Gonzalez but more of a slow, steady performer, you can see tangible results by incorporating speed work into your training. A lot of us start with a goal of “I just want to finish, period”. And then we do, in fact, finish — strong, upright, and proud. The next challenge for many is to do it again, a little bit faster, a little bit stronger. Speed work will help you attain this.

3) If you time or position your warm-up or cool-down jog just right, you can see some really cool owl nesting areas.

4) Speaking from personal experience, within a few weeks of attending Speed Training last season, I took six minutes off of my Half Marathon PR! I went from 2:13 at the 2012 Disneyland Half to 2:07 at the 2012 13.1 Fort Lauderdale. During the latter run I threw in two minutes of speed intervals during every 18 minutes of running, and I really saw (and felt) the difference.

5) I promise not to talk about myself anymore for the remainder of this list. Or rip off any gags from Monty Python.

7) You get to see, hang out, have fun, and run with your FIT buddies midweek, without having to wait for Saturday morning at the buttcrack of dawn to enjoy each other’s company!

So come join the Cool Kids this Tuesday, October 14th, at Central Park in Plantation. The seminar begins at 6:30 PM, the speed training around 7:00. We’ll be at the 400m track in the center of the park. I generally like to park on the West side, by turning onto Central Park Dr. off of Cleary. Here’s a map listing for you:

And another new FIT season is upon us!

Hope you all have been having one heck of a buttkickin’ summer… which in South Florida usually entails endless amounts of sweltering heat, oppressive humidity, bugs so evil and ginormous that they don’t even bother biting, they just pick up and throw refrigerators at you, etc. Summers in South Florida are just fascinating times, aren’t they? ESPECIALLY for runners who want to keep up with their training in the off-season.

And let’s face it, many of you have been keeping up! Whether at Central Park or Vista View, Tuesdays with the Hollywood Run Club or Thursdays with the Ft. Lauderdale Run Club, or even heading back to good ol’ George English every Saturday morning, many of our familiar faces have been spotted hitting the pavement in the early-early morning or after work, sweating it out to maintain their fitness and keep their running form intact. And why not? This is a lifestyle, after all. Whether you’re training for a specific race/event or just want to stay healthy, there’s never a bad reason to strap on a pair of overpriced running shoes and take on the world by challenging yourself, one seemingly-endless running interval at a time.

Anyway, bla bla bla. Here we are at the start of yet another brand-new season of Friends In Training, and for many of us it feels like Back-To-School, but for adults (if by chronological age, not by emotional maturity!) It’s a time to return to our early-morning routine, to seeing the smiling faces of all our old friends, and to start working hard on achieving whatever dreams or goals we’ve set for ourselves in the upcoming year. Plus we’re taking another annual Class Trip together, this time to Alaska of all places, for the Midnight Sun Mayor’s Marathon in June! If you’ve never taken a FIT destination race trip before, talk to anyone who’s been to Big Sur, Washington, Rome, and elsewhere with us.

Well anyway, for returning members, I’m preaching to the choir here. For new members, WELCOME! You’re gonna have a ton of fun with us, and we can’t wait to meet you soon! Speaking of soon, let’s talk about our registration sessions. You can read more about it here, but here’s the info in a nutshell:

In person registration will be on Saturday, July 26th & August 2nd, 2014 from 7:00 – 8:30 AM. All members, even if you register online, should attend these registration sessions. We will have a short run/walk starting at 7:30 AM along with an orientation session. Please dress appropriately. Also, bring a water bottle and something to sit on (a towel or yoga mat will work great). We can’t wait to see you then! Come ready for a great time together! :)

Please note: 11 Month membership is for Alaska Participants. Also, we now have a new 10K Fitness Walkers Program for Beginner Walkers!

Fees: $160 for 8 Months and $220 for 11 months for new members. $128 for 8 Months and $176 for 11 months for returning members.
