FIT Runner Profile: Mare C!

What is going ON, FIT peeps? Howdy, goddag, dzien’ dobry, and a great big olá to you all!

I hope everyone is having a super fun season with FIT so far. As we “earn our yellow” with every sometimes painful yet always exhilarating step on our way to running awesomesauce, it often behooves us to remember with the F in FIT is all about: no, not THAT F (although I’ve heard some of out there on some of those super humid mornings… INSIDE VOICES!), I’m talking about the FRIENDS part. We here at Rhapsody In Yellow (we really need a new name) certainly want to do our part in the whole “Get To Know Your Buddies” process, and that’s why we created these FIT Runner Profiles. More than just a concentrated ego boost to all parties involved, it’s a way of putting names to faces you see every week and finding out more about who they are, why the run, what they’re looking forward to, and almost anything and everything they want to disclose about their super-bad selves!

And speaking of super-bad! Sports uber-legend Muhammad Ali once said: “I hated every minute of training, but I said, Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.” Today’s reigning champ is our Colombian born, New England raised, and now South Florida-living buddy who is a FIT veteran for a few seasons now. A wife, mom of two, Cards Against Humanity and Left-Right-Center enthusiast (seriously, those gaming nights are LEGENDARY), something of a Bon Jovi fan, and social coordinator of inimitable skill, we can only be talking about our friend Mare! Let’s get to know her better in a little tune that we here at the FIT Blog would absolutely love to call…

My best friend Erwin who passed away from cancer at 42 on 10/31/14, I had the unimaginable good luck to know him for 38 years.

FIT Runner Profile: Nicole Z!

What is happening, FIT peeps? Howdy, kaabo, salut, and a big warm kumusta to you all! We’re keeping the ball rolling with our latest FIT Runner Profile, and why shouldn’t we? There’s many of us awesome running buddies just waiting to be discovered, and this is just the place to get the discoverin’ done! I like to say the latter part of the previous sentence in a John Wayne accent. Because that’s how I roll. And that’s usually why I sit alone at parties…

But never mind all that! Speaking of John Wayne, that legendary cowboy actor from the Golden Age of Hollywood had this to say: “Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.” Exemplifying that theme of taking on the challenge of the future is our latest FIT profilee, who hails all the way from… South Florida. YES, we got a native! She’s a third year FIT veteran, with several years of running behind her and many more to come. An insurance guru with a proud pumpkin predilection and a strong Disney fetish (is there any other kind of Disney fetish?), you can see her every Saturday morning with the fine folk in Group D. That’s right, I’m talking about our awesome buddy Nicole, so why not learn something more about her in a little number that we’d just love to call…

Reason for Joining FIT
I joined fit about two years ago. I was introduced to FIT by Albert who used to run with fit. I met him through a Disney Facebook page and he told me all about FIT and it was the best decision ever.

Running goals for the near future (distance, time, specific race, travel, etc.)
I would love to do a Ragnar race bad part is my friends don’t really run so anyone need a member on your team let me know. I also would like to do Keys 100 and New York City Marathon… Of course Boston, but I won’t qualify for that until I’m like 90!!

Favorite Post-Run Meal/Snack/Restaurant
Favorite post run treat is ANYTHING Pumpkin!!!

photo 3 (2)

Why did you start running?
I started running right before my dad passed away on Halloween in 2010. My dad told me “When you run I will always be by your side.” So running always makes me happy as it gives me “time” with my dad.

Finally, tell us anything (or everything!) about yourself!
I am mother of two amazing boys. They our starting to get the run bug too and have completed a few kids runs. I always love the joy on there face when I finish a race as it is truly priceless.

FIT Runner Profile: Kari K!

Hey there, FIT people! Good day, alo, բարեւ, שלום, and of course สวัสดี! Welcome back for yet another fun-filled episode of our ongoing FIT Runner Profile Chronicles, in which we get the amazingly awesome opportunity to get to know more of our amazingly awesome FIT runners, one profile at a time. Hey listen, you’re out there every Saturday morning in the stifling heat and crippling humidity with little sleep at Zero Dark Bupkis and visions of an awesome breakfast lingering just hours away… why not get to know more about the comrades-in-arms sharing the experience with you? You might make a new Breakfast Buddy!!

“Making new Breakfast Buddies” should really be part of our marketing paradigm, but that’s neither here nor there…

ANYWAY… legendary Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw once said: “Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will.” On that note, let’s dive right in to our latest buttkickin’ runner profile! She’s a Jersey girl (we always need more of those!) who has been running for several years now, a seasoned 5K, Half Marathon, and relay runner who’s looking to tackle her first Full in January. A newcomer to FIT, she’s a big fan of the House of Mouse and quizzically obsessive about how she organizes her sugar high. Yes my friends, I’m talking about none other than our pal Kari! Let’s give her a big, friendly, “Andy’s Room” welcome and get to know her in a little number that we’re just proud to call…

Favorite Race (and why)
Ragnar Relay from Miami to Key West. Having to spend 36 hours with a bunch of smelly people in a van doesn’t sound that great, but it’s an AMAZING experience. Running 3 legs of the race with little to no sleep, getting to shower in a high school gym, lots of Dunkin Donuts stops, stopping after the 7-mile bridge to jump into the ocean. All in all everyone should do this race once I their lives, this year will be my second time doing it.

Favorite Cartoon
Movie: Sleeping Beauty
TV Show: The Wuzzles

10 Random Songs on Your Running Playlist
I don’t listen to music while running, I get annoyed by it too easily and messing with my phone to get to a song I want–it drives me nuts!

Reason for Joining FIT
The Goofy Challenge being my first full marathon, I know myself well enough to know I won’t do the long training runs on my own…that and Rosa Melgara made it sound so awesome last year. So here I am!

Favorite 80s Movie
Labyrinth — David Bowie and goblins!

image4 (1)Running goals for the near future (distance, time, specific race, travel, etc.)
Finishing Goofy and being able to walk the next day!

Favorite Post-Run Meal/Snack/Restaurant
I’m an omelette lover so give me a veggie omelette with some Swiss cheese and a chocolate milk and I’m happy.

Finally, tell us anything (or everything!) about yourself!

I’m a total Disney nerd; Run Disney is the reason I started running. It’s my happy place so why not get healthy and play in the parks at the same time?!

Hockey is my favorite sport in the world (Let’s go Devils!).

I sort my Skittles by color before eatting them and my M&M’s too.

FIT Runner Profile: Mishele H!

Well hello again, hey there hi there ho there, aloha, dobrý den, and other assorted salutations of whimsy and wonderment. We’re back with today’s installment of our FIT Runner Profiles, an ongoing journey in which you — our readers — get to know one of your fellow runners and find out many of the things that make them pretty gosh darn awesome! And there’s a lot of gosh darn awesomeness to go around, especially battling exhaustion in bright yellow shirts every dark Saturday morn’, and it’s our job to deliver it to you, one swell person at a time.

Speaking of which, Harry Potter creator and ultra-zillionare British author J.K. Rowling once wrote: “There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.” Our latest profilee is a newcomer to FIT and has been spotted out there hitting the asphalt with us every Saturday morning, kicking butt, taking names, and knocking out mountain trolls like it’s going out of style. She’s a well-established Michelangelo of the Follicle Arts, and is training for her first Half Marathon, the 2014 Miami Beach Halloween Half, having mastered several 5Ks and more along the way. She’s a midwestern native and a bonafide travel junkie, and we’re pleased as pigeons to have her in FIT! That’s right, I’m talking about our friend Mishele, so let’s get to know her better in a little number we’d just love to call…

Getting To Know Mishele H!

photo 5 (1)Full Name: Mishele Hobson

Age: 44

Hometown: Zion, IL

Current Town: Cooper City

Occupation: Hairdresser

FIT Group: D

Years Running: 2 yrs 8 years ago, and just started back up in March

Races Completed
A handful of 5Ks of which I thought were a huge accomplishment for me :) and 8 years ago I did the 8 tough miles in St John, Virgin Islands. That was the longest race for me….and the last time I put running shoes on until 6 mos ago….haven’t stopped running since.

Upcoming Races

  • Halloween 1/2
  • 13.1 Fort Lauderdale
  • A1A Publix Fort Lauderdale…
  • And I am sure more to come :) Go Big or go home….

Favorite Race (and why)
Well considering I have only done 5k’s and one 8 mile race, I would have to say the 8 miler. It was a huge accomplishment for me since I had never ran farther than 6 miles before doing that race. Fast Forward 8 yrs and I am finally completing my goal of running the 1/2.

photo 4 (1)

Favorite Cartoon
I didn’t really care too much about cartoons but give me a Muppetts show and you couldn’t pull me away from the tv….I LOVED Miss Piggy…to this day I still love watching the Muppetts!!!

10 Random Songs on Your Running Playlist
I don’t have a running playlist, I just hit play on my iTunes and if it is too slow a song, hit fast forward. I’d get bored if I heard the same songs over and over again. However, my favorite music is soca and reggae. My friends tell me I was Jamaican in a previous life….

Reason for Joining FIT
I have had this goal to run a 1/2 marathon for years…I finally started back up running last March and decided to sign up for the Halloween 1/2 in October 4 days after my 45th bday. My birthday present to myself :) I started to try on my own the long runs and got to a 8 miler and realized I would need the help and camaraderie of other runners. I met Marcela at Runner’s Depot and her personality and energy was the reason for choosing FIT. I am so happy I did!!!!

photo 3 (1)Favorite 80s Movie
BREAKFAST CLUB!!! I have probably seen it over 100 times….

Running goals for the near future (distance, time, specific race, travel, etc.)
So considering the longest race I have done is 8 miles, my goal right now is to be able to run, walk, or crawl over the finish line of the Halloween 1/2 with a big smile on my face that I did it and collect that glorious medal that I have worked so hard for and for all the times my kids have said “You’re getting up at what time to run???” hahahaha

Favorite Post-Run Meal/Snack/Restaurant
After running my all time favorite meal is my veggie omelet made with extra mushrooms (I LOVE MUSHROOMS), spinach, onion, zucchini, red pepper, and crumbly aged real cheddar cheese (not the fake stuff :) with a side of avocado!!!!!! mmmm num num num….

photo 1 (1)Finally, tell us anything (or everything!) about yourself!

I have been married for 19 years to an awesome guy, I have 2 teenage girls 15 and 16. (Stay off the road, one is driving and the other has a permit)2 dogs with a combined weight of 12 lbs. I have been a hairdresser for over 25 years and still love it like day 1! I have lived in Wisconsin, Illinois, Alabama, Virgin Islands, South Carolina, and Florida!! I have traveled to just about every Carribbean Island and have been to Paris, Rome, Venice, Amsterdam, London, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and Munich and finally in the near future Alaska for the first time with my new friends!!! I think I am most excited about Alaska is to have local Salmon….my favorite food of all time…….

FIT Runner Profile: Robyn H!

Well hey there, goeie dag, osiyo, bonjour, and sveiki! The FIT season is in full swing and that means we’re back with yet another installment of our FIT Runner Profiles, in which you — our adoring readers — play an exciting round of “Get to know me!” with our amazing cadre of running pals. I mean, the F in FIT doesn’t stand for ‘frammistats’, does it? Nope, it means ‘Friends’, which is what we all are and what the heck is a ‘frammistat’ anyhow? Regardless, thank you for reading and let’s get right to work, shall we?

Legendary British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Our profilee for today hails all the way from Parkersburg, West Virginia — hometown of the Wood County Ravens football team! — and is a FIT newcomer with four years of running and several races already under her belt. She’s also training for her very first Full Marathon in January and will Never Say Die!! That’s right, I’m talking about our good friend Robyn H, our FIT buddy subject for today. Sit down by the fireplace and make yourself comfortable as we find out what makes Robyn so awesome in a little number we’d like to call…

Besides running I love shopping, going to Disney with my family, and traveling.

FIT Runner Profile: Francesca F!

Well howdy, nǐ hǎo, barev dzez, and good day to you all, our fellow FIT buddies! We’re back again with a brand new FIT season, so it behooves us to bring back our much beloved FIT Runner Profile series, in which we get to know our fellow members and find out what makes them tick, unique, and buttkickingly awesome! Is buttkickingly a word? Well it is now, I suppose…

The British military legend T.E. Lawrence once wrote the following about transforming vision into action: “All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible. This I did.” Our profilee today is a newcomer to FIT but is quite the experienced runner, with bunches of races under her belt already and a thirst to take on her first Full this year! She’s also a volunteer with an animal rescue group, looking out for our local fine furry friends and helping them find “furever” homes. That’s right, we’re talking about our new FIT buddy Francesca F, the subject of today’s FIT Profile. Find out more about Francesca and what made her join FIT, motivates her as a runner, and her interests and humor in a little number we’d like to call…

  • Thong Song – Sisqo**
  • Like a Drum – Guy Sebastian
  • I’m Different – 2 Chainz
  • Jealous – Chromeo
  • Drink to That All Night – Jerrod Niemann
  • It’s Tricky – Run DMC

**This song came out when I was in 4th grade and you needed someone over 18 to buy it, so I had my grandpa buy it for me. Then, my dad found it in my bedroom and told me grandpa was going to go to jail for buying it, so Sisqo was returned to Target :( Now that I’m older and dare I say wiser, nay, perhaps savvy, I want to ask my dad, “Would you really put your father in jail? Doubt it.” BOOM, in yo’ face pops!

Reason for Joining FIT
My old neighbor Jenn Wilder used to run with FIT, and said it would be a great way to train for my first full marathon. It’s also easier getting out of bed early on a Saturday morning when you realize you aren’t alone.

I also saw the yellow pineapple container when I ran down A1A and wondered who was organized enough to have water stations set up-my kind of people.

Favorite 80s Movie
I was born in ’89, so non-applicable, but I love me some Meryl Streep!

Running goals for the near future (distance, time, specific race, travel, etc.)
Finish the Publix Half under 1:50 this year.

I’d like to do the Nike Women’s Half in DC, and maybe a race in Hawaii one day-something scenic!

franc02

Favorite Post-Run Meal/Snack/Restaurant
BACON!!!!! And a full stack of chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream and powdered sugar from Original Pancake House. I mean the real reason any of us run is so we can eat more delicious things, right?

What’s your biggest fear about running?
Crapping my pants in a race à la Paula Radcliffe at the Athens Olympics.

Why couldn’t the teddy bear finish his lunch?
Because he was stuffed! HAHAHAHA

franc04

Finally, tell us anything (or everything!) about yourself!
I have two conjoined toes; my mom says it makes me a better swimmer.

If I ever say “my kids,” I’m referring two my two dogs, Bongo and Samson, and two kitties, Annabella and Delilah. Yes, I indeed have a Samson and Delilah, and most likely Delilah will end up slaying Samson as before- not for his strength, but for always steeling her kitty treats.

I ran my first half marathon hungover, finished under 2 hours, and never barfed… I should’ve gotten a medal for that.

There’s a whole bunch of FIT members who try to hide their secret identities as buttkickingly great peeps, and it’s my job to expose them to the world! Because that’s how I roll…

Going back to the well of award-winning French writers, Nobel Prize-winning author Albert Camus once wrote: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” Exemplifying that invincibility is today’s subject, a second year FIT runner and a running buddy beyond compare. Not only is she a registered nurse, which already makes her pretty bad-ass, but her quiet exterior masks a ginormous sense of humor that makes her one of the most fun people to run with. I can account to this personally, as I ran the 5K and Half-Marathon portions of the 2014 Walt Disney World Dopey Challenge with her and Kristi, and I never had more fun at a race my entire life. And if you give her any lip, she’s a trained martial artist who will whip your butt! So just look out! *ahem* Anyway, we’re talking about our very own Ines C, the subject of today’s Runner Profile. Find out more about our good friend and what makes her so unbelievably Ines in a little thing we’d like to call…

FIT Runner Profile: Mike J!

Howdy, Hola, and Buongiorno everyone. Welcome back for yet another fun-filled edition of FIT Runner Profiles, our continuing series in which we get to know our fellow running buddies and find out what makes them unique, interesting, fascinating, or any other synonyms you can come up with because quite frankly I can’t find my Thesaurus. Do people even have Thesauruses anymore, or is it ‘Thesauri’? Ahh I forget…

ANYWAY… the influential French writer Gustave Flaubert once wrote: “The most glorious moments in your life are not the so-called days of success, but rather those days when out of dejection and despair you feel rise in you a challenge to life, and the promise of future accomplishments.” Our profilee for today hails all the way from Blackfoot, Idaho — “The Potato Capital of the World!” — and is one of the few bonafide cowboys left in South Florida. He’s a comparative newcomer to running, but since he became an active runner over the past year he’s accomplished a great deal of success. Yes, we’re talking about our good friend Mike J, the subject of today’s Runner Profile. Find out more about Mike, and what motivated him to hit the asphalt all in the name of fitness, in a little number we’d like to call…

I don’t have a “Running Playlist” I just run!

Reason for Joining FIT
I have 4 sons, YES 4!  Three of them are now in college and my youngest will be going in 6 months.  Needless to say I found myself with alot of extra time on my hands compilled by the fact that I was overweight and did not like what I saw in the mirror.  A year ago last January I set out by myself to run a mile….I didn’t finish and was frustrated.  Day after day and month after month I perservered and through much Blood, Sweat and Tears I found myself running 10-12 miles each saturday.  I had lost over 40 pounds and was feeling Awesome.  I soon found that I was getting bored running by myself and needed more motivation.  That is when I went to a running expo at Vista View and saw the FIT Tent & Team….Marcela, Audrey and Brett. After speaking with them I was sold and signed up for FIT the next week.  It was then I knew my journey was just beginning.

FIT Runner Profile: Katarina B!

Howdy, Shalom, and Aloha, FIT peeps! We’re almost a month into 2014, and to celebrate that we are back with another FIT Runner Profile; our continuing series in which we get to know the vast legion of wonderful and wondrous wonderment that makes up our awesome group.

Renown author and investor Robert T. Kiyosaki once said, “It’s not what you say out of your mouth that determines your life, it’s what you whisper to yourself that has the most power.” Our profilee today is hardcore, coming from the streets of South Central!! Europe, that is. That’s right, our awesome friend from Slovenia, Katarina B, is the subject of today’s profile. Anyone who has gotten to know Kat can pretty much testify that she may very well be the funniest person walking the planet. Her Facebook exchanges are legendary. But she’s not only about the yuks; while she’s an accomplished and experienced runner, she also has a really cool project with her beautifully inspirational website Be-Live Us, which she describes as follows:

“I was always a type of person who liked to hear positive stories on success. There are plenty of those who went the extra mile, crossed many bridges, went up and down – did whatever it took, but they did it. As I believe these stories should be shared in order to encourage others, I decided to work on a web site, where everyone has an opportunity to tell their story.”

So lets get to know more about our friend who endeavors to share inspiration — and tons of laughter — with those around her with a little number we call…

FIT Runner Profile: Ilene S!

Greetings and Salutations, FIT peeps! We’re here with another Runner Profile, a continuing series in which we get to know the vast legion of wonderful and wondrous wonderment that makes up our awesome group.

Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “The world itself is the will to power – and nothing else! And you yourself are the will to power – and nothing else!” Our profilee today is our good buddy Ilene, a South FL attorney by day and buttkickin’ superheroine by night! OK I’m not 100% sure on that last part, but I do know that Ilene is always a friendly face AND a fierce competitor, be it on land or sea. Not only is she an experienced runner, swimmer, and Triathlete, Ilene is also a most entertaining running companion at 1 in the morning on a dark stretch of the Overseas Highway during the Keys100 relay. This I know from experience :) Anyway, find out more about our friend by settling in and reading a piece I’d like to call…
